Maplewood Firefighter

Ryan Hummert

Ryan was born to his parents, Andrew & Jackie and his older sister Ashley, December 14, 1985.  While growing up Ryan had a way to make people laugh, even at an early age.  With Ryan’s father being a former Mayor of Maplewood, Ryan grew-up near the fire service.  While in attendance at Rockwood Summit High School, Ryan was the Captain of the varsity football team his Junior and Senior year.  He also played ice hockey in high school during the winter.  Ryan excelled at football, so much that he was given a football scholarship to play for Missouri Valley College as a defensive end.

Ryan lived with his parents in Fenton, Missouri and worked for the family business on his off days.  He enjoyed being the social director for all his friends.  One of his favorite roles was organizing the annual float trip, among other outings.  Once Ryan decided to enter the Fire Service he excelled in his pursuit to become a Paramedic/Firefighter.  Ryan graduated Paramedic school in 2007 with his National Registry.

The City of Maplewood Fire Department hired Ryan in August of 2007 as a Firefighter/Paramedic.  Being the rookie was easy for Ryan because of his laid back personality and his ability to get along with anyone.  In January of 2008 Ryan began the St. Louis County Fire Academy, graduating in March of 2008.  Since being hired by Maplewood, Ryan successfully resuscitated a cardiac arrest victim, earning him a clinical save.  The vehicle fire that Ryan was on-scene of when the sniper shot and killed him was Ryan’s first official fire of his career.

Ryan had a smile that lit up a room and will never be forgotten by those who knew him, if even if they only knew him for a moment.  Our prayers go out to the family and friends of Ryan Andrew Hummert.  Always a son, always a friend, always a brother.
